Extremely Rare Boston or New York Federal Regency sofa table circa 1820 with Ebinized turned column pedestal base on a rectilinear platform that is supported on four S-curved legs terminating in casters. Pressed brass pulls on drawers and dummy drawers on one side so table can be seen from all sides. The flaps/drop-leaf are supported by fancy inlayed wood (ebony, birds eye maple and mahogany veneers of the highest quality. The supports are single triangular pieces attached to the frame.

Charles E Montgomery declared sofa tables the "rarest of all American drop-leaf tables." Sofa tables were quickly associated with convenience and flexible use. A few years after the publication of Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, the English designer George Smith in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration...suggested that sofa tables could be used "for the Drawing Room, Breakfast Parlor, or Library."
