Rare .69 caliber flintlock musket by Tryon of Philadelphia showing Texas star and word “Texas” at middle portion of lock. This is one of 1500 ordered for the Republic of Texas in the year 1840 and only 860 were shipped due to cholera epidemic in the east. 321 of these muskets were issued to Texas troops which marched overland to Santa Fe in the expedition of 1841. The Texans were forced to surrender to governor Armijo and they were ordered to fire their rifles into the air and lay them on the ground at the surrender. The New Mexicans gathered up the long rifles, placed them in a wagon and carted them off and possibly destroyed them as only a few are known. An article in the Albuquerque Tribune chronicles these events in history and mentions that only 6 of these muskets were known to collectors in the 1950’s and that three were owned by Charles and Rudy Meketa who had searched them out nearly 50 years ago and that the three other examples known at that time belonged to famous TGCA members Paul Jenke, Dick Fredericks, and J. W. Bates. The rifles are 57-1/8” overall with 41-5/8” barrels. The musket remains in good original condition showing a grey patina finish, some scattered
