Presenting two rare antique Sterling Award Metals from the Order of Saint George won at a picnic by a Thomas Hogle in 1898. One Award is for a Tug of War contest, marked Sons of Saint George July 23, 1898 with a knight on his horse surrounded by a Turquoise enameled Garter inscribed Honi soit qui mal y pense, meaning Shame be to him who thinks evil of it. The second Award metal is inscribed 5 Mile Handicap 1st Prize and inscribed with a gorgeous Lion both measuring 2 inches long and attaching with an old style C clasp.
HISTORY: The Order of Sons of Saint George was first established in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1891. It was originally founded for the purpose of resisting attacks by the Molly Maguires, a secret society of Irish immigrant laborers working in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. The Molly Maguires were founded after the predominately Irish Catholic union called the Workingmens Benevolent Association was broken up the mine owners and officials. The Molly Maguires operated in secret and used the signs, passwords and grips of the Ancient Order of Hibernians to conceal their criminal activities, which consisted of raiding mine officials homes and beating them up, threatening them with death and destroying mine owners property during the labor disputes in the 1860s-1870s. The Order of the Sons of Saint George evolved into an ethnic fraternal benefit society for Englishmen residing in the United States of America and their sons and grandsons.
