Excellent and bold autographs of jazz legends Billie Holiday and clarinetist Artie Shaw. Shaw signed Holiday as his band's vocalist in 1938, becoming the first white bandleader to hire a full-time African-American female singer to tour the segregated South, though short-lived, as Holiday was continually racially heckled by the audience throughout their tour. Here, the jazz impresarios sign a leaf of an autograph book: ''Billie Holiday'' in black ink and ''Sincerely Artie Shaw'' in pencil. With ''Mon. Apr. 19 / Joy Land 1937'' at bottom right, presumably where the autographs were garnered. Detached autograph leaf measures 5.5'' x 4'', with two additional signatures on verso: ''Ray Keating'' and what appears to be ''Bert Nisbet''. Some minor foxing and toning throughout. With JSA COA. Very good condition.
