Rare 19thc political illustration by Thomas Nast, the cover of the November 22, 1884 edition of Harper's Weekly, New York, illustrated magazine. Depicts race relations in politics during the last half of the 19th Century. An illustration of President-elect Cleveland saying " Shake heartily, boys!" The title, "One of the First Fruits of The Victory ". Caption below reads - "The Atlanta Constitution says, "The negro will find that his best friend is the Southern Democrat. President Cleveland is his friend. The Southern people are his friends. Every right that they have as freemen and citizens will be jealously protected by the white men of the South, who have been their neighbors for years. In their schools, at the ballot-boxes, everywhere, they have their full rights. That man is the best Southerner and the best Democrat who stands by this doctrine and shows the negro that we are his true friends."
