Rare 1872 Greeley & Brown Porthole Jugate Rare and Sought-After 1872 Greeley & Brown Porthole Ju
Rare and Sought-After 1872 Greeley & Brown "Porthole" Jugate in Lovely Condition. A wonderful specimen from the Joe Brown Collection. Huge 34mm piece, with photo of candidate and his running mate set into hollow brass shell and raised portrait of the presidential standard-bearer Horace Greeley on reverse. Made for both tickets in 1868 and 1872, this variety is notorious for coming with damaged photos, usually significantly so. This one is a beauty; a shallow surface depression in the field above Greeley's left shoulder (does not break the surface of the emulsion), and two very small ones on the Brown side (one by his hairline on his right, one where his coat joins his beard) distract minimally. This item has sold publicly and privately several times in the $6000 range, but out of deference to today's condition-conscious market, we place a conservative guide value on this example. But, in our opinion, this is a copy that all but those who collect "condition for condition's sake" would find quite easy to live with. Diameter 35mm.
