Rare Victorian 1870's Aesthetic, James Tufts Boston, silver-plate Tea Caddy, Sugar & Creamer. Numbered design 2231, shaped like a pear with twig handles and four leaves, two wrapping each side. A naturalistic design very popular during the Victorian period. Condition very good, with only a few minor dings, primarily along bottom, with fine scattered scratches. The handles & leaves are firmly attached. No splits or cracks & no repairs. Clearly marked "James W. Tufts, Boston, Warranted Quadruple-plate, # 2231. Tufts, born in 1835, was the son of a blacksmith. He apprenticed to an apothecary shop at the age of 15. At age 21, his apprenticeship complete, he established his own apothecary shop. At the age of 27 he developed, & began manufacturing, the successful Arctic Soda Machine. Parts of his new machine were silver plated & this led him to manufacture a line of silver plated pitchers, dishes & table accessories in 1862. Â
