Rare 1865 Montana Territory Map by W.W. de Lacy
For your consideration is a framed 1865 Montana Territory Map by W. W. (Walter Washington) De Lacy, 1819-1892. An amazing piece of Montana and Western US history. In the bottom left the map shows the full title and description "Map of the Territory of Montana with portions of the adjoining territories. Showing the Gulch or Placer Diggings actually worked, and Districts where Quartz (Gold & Silver) Lodes have been discovered to January 1st 1865. Drawn by W.W. de Lacy, for the use of The First Legislature of Montana." The border bold outline in red colour delineates the Territory of Montana from the US territories of Dakota and Idaho, and also from the British colonies (British Possessions) in Canada. The Montana county lines of Big Horn, Choteau, Gallatin, Madison, Beaverhead, Edgerton, Jefferson, Deer Lodge, and Missoula are outlined by red coloured lines and include a colour scale indicating gulch diggings and quartz lodes. The 1865 map is considered one of the rarest territorial maps of the western United States. The map includes an inset of "Map showing the routes from the Missouri River to Fort Laramie, where they connect with the large map" as well as the existing wagon "roads" bisecting the territory from both the East and South. The navigable rivers of the Missouri and Yellowstone are highlighted along with their major tributaries. The map shows nice condition and colour overall. Professionally mounted in a black wood frame, no obvious marring observed. Visible art measures 19"W x 25.25"L, frame is 20.75"W x 27"L x .75"D
