Rare 1862 Colt Police (conversion) to .38 centerfire caliber or new model breech loading pistol cartridge era manufactured 5-1/2” barrel mounted with ejector rod housing, 1871/72 patent dates, recoil plate and loading gate added to back of frame. Unique iron guard and backstrap. Blue and case hardened finish, varnish wood grips, serial #39114. Utilizing leftover percussion parts. Refer Variations of Colt New Police and Pocket Breech Loading Pistols by Breslin, Pirie, and Price page 85-90 where author states ‘only 51 of these pistols were identified during his survey and identified as having 6 narrow lands identical to rifle design for Lightning, Cop & Thug, and New House pistols’. This is the only iron backstrap and triggerguard example known to this cataloger in this series. The revolver remains in good to very good condition showing 40-60% original thinning blue finish on barrel, some lightening at the edges, minor erosion and pinprick pitting, there is traces of blue on the ejector rod housing drifting on the edges. The two-line barrel address is sharp and reads “Hartford Conn”. The area around the wedgeport and ends of wedge show some nicks. The cylinder shows
