Rare 1861 Letter From Florida. Autograph Letter Signed, "Thos Le. B", six pages, 5.25" x 8.0", Indian River, Florida, April 1, 1861, to a friend in the North. Penned by an adventurous Northern entrepreneur less than two weeks before the bombardment of Fort Sumter, this bubbly letter from deep in rural Florida betrays the writer's near ignorance of the tumultuous events unfolding across the nation at large. It partially reads, "...we mail as many of our letters as possible at New Smyrna...I have won the reputation of being the best cook among all the bachelors on the river...as to the political excitement, about the extent of the information we have received here is that Lincoln is President & the Southern States have Seceded. I shall be happy to see you at any time you chose to come...I intend to surprise my friends at the North by showing my handsome self when I am not expected...perhaps you would like to have a couple of Rattle snakes & two or three Aligators (sic)...I killed two of the latter to day one 6 inches long & one 4 feet in length...". This letter comes with a memo, 3.0" x 5.0", assigning it a Luhrs Collection catalog number (37-103) and giving a synopsis of its content. There is also a 1956 dealer's receipt pricing this item at $1.50! All materials, including the 1861 letter, are in Very Fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
