MILLARD FILLMORE (1800-1874). 13th President of the United States, serving from 1850 until 1853, and the last member of the Whig Party to hold that office.
November 13, 1852-Dated, rarely encountered, Autograph Letter Signed “Millard Fillmore,” as President of the United States, 1 page, 5” x 8”, Choice Extremely Fine. A brief but scarce letter by Fillmore, penned during his short presidential term, regarding plans for a hospital. This ALS reads, in part: “I have received your note and the original drawings of the hospital or asylum; but not the copies which I desired ... Truly yours, (Signed) Millard Fillmore". Fillmore ultimately founded the Buffalo General Medical Center, located in Buffalo, New York, a 511-bed hospital which was built and completed after his death in 1855. Expected folds with faded residual tone from a prior mounting along left edge, not affecting text. Fillmore’s huge 4.25” long brown signature is dark and crisp across most of the sheet at bottom. Docket on the blank verso. Accompanied by an engraved Portrait of Fillmore which his signature in facsimile below. Any “Millard Fillmore” Autograph Letter Signed as President is quite rare. (2 items).
