1846-Dated Broadside Style Lithograph, “Design of the Washington National Monument to be Erected in the City of Washington,” Washington, D.C., Framed, Very Fine.
This rare and highly impressive historic 1846 Lithographic is titled, “Design of the Washington National Monument to be Erected in the City of Washington.” The primary central image is of the original monument design, which included a multi-collonade building as a pedestal at the base of the monument. Subscription information and facsimile signatures are located within the design beneath. Only some light paper wrinkling and scattered tone noted. This imposing Lithograph measures 17.5” x 24” (by sight), and is framed to an overall size of 21.5” x 28”. Inscription below the image reads: “Design by Robt Mills Arch and Lithd by Chas Fenderich, Washt.” The lower portion of the print reads: “Earnestly recommended to the favour of our countryman,” and bears the facsimile signatures of presidents Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore and John Quincy Adams. Inset within lower right shows a portion of the original receipt that donors would receive to show the amount they “contributed to the erection of this monument.” A rare and historic piece ready for display.
The following note is written on the backboard of the frame: “Lloyd found this lithograph in the eaves over Aunt Eva’s bedroom. About 5 yrs ago. It has been appraised from $200 to $3300. I put clean pastel paper behind the painting to halt further breakdown. Then heavy cardboard backing. This piece of wood was in two pieces. Upper part removed by an antique dealer. Ellen C. Knight, June 15, 2009.”
