1787 Fugio Cent “Cross After Date” Type Newman 1-L

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays / STATES UNITED. “Cross After Date” Type. Newman 1-L. Fine to Very Fine.

Rarity-6 Very Rare (Only 13-30 known in all grades). 144.3 grains. This is a well detailed example. This major variety is listed and illustrated for type, on page 83 in the Red Book as the "Cross after date" type. This is the "STATES UNITED" version (also known as a K. 1-L variety as listed in Kessler’s book THE FUGIO CENTS) of the Redbook, "Obv Cross After Date, No Cinquefoils" type. This coin appears chestnut to deeper brown in color, having somewhat mottled tone. This coin has not been cleaned and a closer inspection under magnification shows minor roughness to the surfaces plus a few tiny scattered surface bumps. All of the Roman numerals on the sundial are clearly seen, as are “FUGIO,” “1787,” and the important Cross After Date device.
The reverse side is dark brown in color with slightly lighter highpoints with some details of Very Fine. All of the thirteen linked rings and legends “STATES UNITED” and “WE ARE ONE” are clear having just a touch of some surface verdigris and the rims are free of any bumps or bruises. This is a very collectable coin of a major listed FUGIO type, missing in most collections.
