Ralph DuCasse Wartime Papers/Letters.
DUCASSE, RALPH. 1916-2003. An archive of military language study sheets and other wartime activity ephemera, well over 200 pages of handwritten letters sent from the Philippines, and two photographs, c. 1943-1945. The wartime related ephemera consists of a folder with a mixture of Japanese language study/vocabulary sheets and notes, several sheets on the Army Specialized Training Program for Foreign Area and Language Studies, rate sheets for MacDill Air Field, and at least two typed/mimeographed play/skit scripts, and a number of humorous poems/songs (typed and written), presumably for theatricals on base; some of the writing possibly by DuCasse . Other items include: The Control fo Germany and Japan, by Harold G. Moulton & Louis Marlio, The Brookings Institute, 1944; and an information booklet On the Marshall Plan for Americans Going Abroad. Most of the letters are addressed to his wife, Micaela Martinez DuCasse, but several are to Pal and Pellie (Harriet Dean and Elsie Whitaker Martinez). There are also a number of letters from his wife. The majority of letters are written on 13in x 8in onionskin paper, some on American Red Cross letterhead. The contents are affectionate, discussing home issues, their young daughter, and Pal and Pellie (Harriet Dean and Elsie Whitaker Martinez, his mother-in-law). They also touch on his impressions, activities, reading, etc. Condition is generally good, but the flimsy paper with edge tears/creases. Artist Ralph DuCasse worked in Military Intelligence during WWII, specializing in the Japanese Language. He was stationed/trained at Fort Ord in Monterey (and elsewhere), and was eventually sent to the Philippines, Okinawa, and Tokyo.  From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
