Vanderbilt. Signed on the last page by Augustus Schell as president of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern RR. AUGUSTUS SCHELL (1812-1884). Lawyer to "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt; Railroad executive; Financier. A close friend of Commodore Vanderbilt, Schell became an expert in the expanding field of corporate law and provided Vanderbilt with legal services in virtually all of his dealings. From 1862 on, he served as a director of the New York & Harlem RR, Hudson River RR, New York Central RR, Lake Shore and Michigan Southern RR, Chicago & Northwestern RR and the Union Pacific RR, as well as others. Schell served the "Commodore" well in his battle against the Drew/Fisk/Gould combination for control of the Erie, and assistance was invaluable in helping Vanderbilt assemble the New York Central system.
