In the words of Rupert Conrad: "HOW I LONGED TO HAVE A METHOD
OF MY OWN TO DRAW BEAUTIFULLY, BUT NOT BY THE METHOD of the
academic schools. I wanted to be myself! After many years, I stumbled onto
something that had promise. Abstract, done like the masters Braque and
others, had reached its goal. I noted that Chinese calligraphy was much
more—it had great dimensions! This was about 1949 when I realized my
drawing was still weak. As I mentioned in my pledge of 1929, this could
be a great opening. Then I realized how much I needed to learn to draw,
and so, for twenty years I struggled with drawing and composition. The
wisdom, magic, and marvels of Chinese drawings are beyond their time,
going back at least two thousand years. Our present rockets are a part of
their wisdom. I have filled hundreds of drawing books and sketch pads,
developing calligraphy spontaneously from the subconscious. My wife,
Ruth, went to sleep hearing the fast screech of my pen! Every phase of life,
including our travels, especially in Mexico, have far greater emphasis in the
free, uninhabited release in this form of expression."
