ROY SCHATT (American, 1919-May 4, 2002) JAMES DEAN signed "Roy Schatt" in black ink on verso 2 artist stamps on verso "Vintage" inscribed in ink on verso vintage gelatin silver print 13 5/8 x 16 9/16 in. (34.6 x 42.1 cm) 1954 PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner LITERATURE Roy Schatt, JAMES DEAN: A PORTRAIT, NEW YORK, 1982, p. 82 (illustrated) It was largely through the images by Roy Schatt that James Dean became such a legend. Schatt was a photographer with much experience capturing those in the theatrical and cinematic world at the time he met James Dean in 1954. Dean requested Schatt teach him the art of photography and, due to the huge amount of time spent in both their photo sessions and their photo lessons, Schatt and Dean established a strong relationship. Dean requested that their photo sessions take place out of the studio so Schatt could document his activities, perhaps with the foresight that this would enhance the image he hoped to project to his public. This photograph was taken inside Dean's apartment and Schatt referred to this series of photographs taken at his window as "some of my best compositions" (Schatt, p. 80).
