YELLOW ABSTRACTION, from 1968, is a completely abstract geometric composition. In Lichtenstein's visual language typical of this period, its graphic lines and benday dots suggest the side of a suburban house, the awning of a roadway diner, or a deco train in motion. The reflective brass panel near the center and the way the stripes end in a squared-off zigzag at the right-hand side lend a controlled, almost abstracted Art Deco sensibility to the work. Given its date, the painting appears to be the forerunner of the "Modern" and "Mirror" series of the late 1960s, as well as the subsequent "Entablature" works. YELLOW ABSTRACTION is a seemingly unique effort by the artist in this period to incorporate familiar sculptural elements within a familiar frame of painting.
