ROXBURY 1775 DAGGER.
7" Overall. This exact knife is shown on full page 68 of Madison Grant’s The Knife in Homespun America. Mr. Grant describes this knife “Beautiful example of a dagger composed of the remnant of the sword blade", faceted bone grip w/ flaring pommel & brass quillons. The piece was made at the Roxbury camps just outside of Boston, Massachusetts prior to the start of the revolution. Soldiers frequently utilized their spare time in making knives, powder horns & other accoutrements. The markings of the facets of the handle are as follows: "ROXBURY CAMPS NOV 1775 / IF I DO LOSE AND YOU DO FIND / GIVE IT TO ME FOR IT IS MINE / ASHELL CORNWELL HIS". The blade retains the makers mark near the cross guard, Harvey 1730. The guard, reduced in size bears a mark in cartouche. The grip is crosshatched as well as inscribed. CONDITION: very good overall, blade has iron patina w/ pitting. The bone grip is in wonderful condition w/ honey color & looks too good for its purported age of over 250 years. We make no warranty as to authenticity, though our opinion differs w/ at least one authority, sold w/ out reserve. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (02-13831-2/JS). $800-1,200.
