ROUGET DE LISLE, CLAUDE-JOSEPH
(1760 - 1836) French military officer and composer who in 1792 wrote what was to become the French national anthem, ""La Marseillaise"". Originally the song had been titled ""War Song of the Army of the Rhine"". Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Oct. 10, [1826] in French to Dr. Chapelaine, asking his friend to send a promised ticket for a husband and wife, and mentioning his visit to Ternes where he found his house empty: ""...masters, children, domestics, horses, all running in the streets. As well, I returned to Paris without telling anyone. I will be trying to win some money for once on Tuesday. Will you be here?..."". Lightly toned, otherwise very good and a fine example for framing.
