ROOSEVELT, THEODORE
(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Fine content T.L.S. as Vice President on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Oyster Bay, N.Y., July 6, 1901, to Ely Garrison of Simmons Hardware Store in St. Louis, MO, requesting assistance in procuring saddles for a Missouri militia organization. In part: ""...I am in receipt of your letter...I do not know whether I can get those saddles or not, for I take it for granted that those that were of use have already been used in equipping the regulars. I know that all efforts to get hold of the carbines have proved fruitless. Now I do not think it would be of any use for me to write to the War Department on my own hook about an organization in Missouri. If, however, you will get the Adjutant General of Missouri to make an application on your behalf, I will then most gladly...forward the application myself with an endorsement from me..."". A few staple holes at top left, light soiling to margin, the usual folds, else boldly signed and very good.
