123. THEODORE ROOSEVELT Fine content T.L.S. on The Outlook letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Jan. 2, 1912, to American historian and Rev. at Radcliffe College, Samuel McCord Crothers, in part: "...I was glad you presided at that progressive meeting the other day. We must get the Republican Party on the side of the progressives, and on the other hand we must keep the progressives sane...". Following his retirement and return to the U.S. in 1910 following an African safari, Roosevelt emerged as the leader in the progressive wing of the Republican party. Concerned about the increasingly conservative bent in the Taft administration, he declared in Feb. 1912, his candidacy for the Republican nomination despite his longtime vow he would not seek a third term. His support of the progressive, or Bull Moose, ticket fatally split the beleaguered Republican party, paving the way for Woodrow Wilson's election.
