ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D.
(1882 - 1945) Thirty-second President of the United States who instituted the ""New Deal"" programs and who led the United States through most of World War II. An extraordinarily rare D.S. ""Franklin D. Roosevelt"" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Jan. 20, 1936, an ornately-engraved promotion of Malin Craig to serve as General, while serving as Chief of Staff of the Army, which is an exceedingly rare form of promotion to be signed in 1936. This form of appointment was generally used until the term of Theodore Roosevelt, after which it was abandoned. In this case, owing to the very high level of the promotion, Roosevelt must have deemed Craig worthy of this ornate document. Co-signed by GEORGE H. DERN as Secretary of War. Malin Craig (1875 - 1945) had a military career which spanned from the Spanish-American War to World War I.I. He headed the American occupation forces in Europe after World War I, and served as Roosevelt's Army Chief of Staff from 1935 to 1939. As Chief of Staff, Craig pointed out the Army's lack of manpower and material, focused on Army planning, and prepared for World War II as best as he could given governmental restraint. A tiny chip at the top margin, else very boldly signed by Roosevelt, near fine and never folded.
