Rookwood Art Pottery special piece, pansy vase in Standard glaze, artist signed CAB for Constance A. Baker (who worked at Rookwood 1892 - 1904). Shape #623.

Measures approx 5 1/4 inches high.

Inverted cone-shaped base. Full round, slightly ovoid body with narrow neck flaring quickly out to the rim. Ground has a wide range of colours from a bright golden yellow, through orange-peach to browns and greens. Very beautiful painting of a band of Pansies and Pansy buds right accross the front and sides and a single flower on the back. Detail must be studied to be appreciated - very fine and subtle. Colours of flowers: yellows, greens, with tones of orange and purple on the lone flower at the back.

Impressed marks underneath: Rookwood mark for 1897; artist initials CAB; shape 623 and 2 enigmatic marks - a triangle and a dot, which probably indicate that the vase had a special purpose/experiment/"was to be kept for study purposes, or to have it photographed for advertising". (page 220 Rookwood Pottery by Anita J. Ellis).

Good condition except for the crazing which is typical of Rookwood pieces of this age and which is very clearly shown in the 'photographs.
