ROMANIA Vlad Dracul DRACULA FATHER AR COIN
Vlad Dracul (December 1436 - shortly after March,1442, fall of 1443 - November or December of 1447). AR Ban (11mm, 0.39 g). Type 1a. Aquila with open wings, head turned right looking toward a cross which emerges from beneath its wing / Winged dragon left, with animal head, its right paw raised, the left one with four talons, coiled snake-like tail. MBR p. 31, 253. The coins of Vlad II, so-called "Dracul" ("the Devil") are the rarest and most fascinating pieces of the numismatic history of Walachia. The modern story of Dracula is based on the son of Vlad II, the infamous Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) whose practice of impaling his enemies on sharpened stakes readily earned him a reputation for sadistic cruelty. Vlad Tepes never struck any coins, so during his reign all coins in circulation consisted of silver pieces such as this one and those of his grandfather, the famous king Mircea cel Batrân (Mircea the Old). Vlad II`s coins must have readily stood out from all the rest as they were the only coins bearing the peculiar dragon symbol on their reverse. It is therefore easy to see how the character of the real king, the peculiar name of the family (Draculesti) and the dragon emblem of their coins, came together and eventually gave rise to the story of Dracula, a fictional creature of the devil, whose appetite for blood echoed that of its historical predecessors. Coins of Vlad II are exceedingly rare, with perhaps 10-15 in existence. Of these the majority are in museums, and such a coin is missing in virtually every medieval collection. This specimen is one of the few available privately and quite possibly the best preserved specimen on record.
