ROMAN PROVINCIAL, THRACE: Pautalia, Caracalla, 198-217, AE30 (13.82g), Tachev-222, cf. Varbanov-5189, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield with gorgoneion // satyr dancing left, raising right hand in the air, nymph seated left and cross-legged on bed, some peripheral delamination and light smoothing marks, very rare, accompanied by collector's envelope, Fine, ex Thomas R. Miller Collection. The reverse is based on a popular contemporary theme known as Invitation to Dance, which features a dancing satyr next to a seated nymph. Several of these sculptures have survived since ancient times and are now on display in various museums.
