(50.8 x 64 cm) 1856 ESTIMATE: $4,000-5,000 PROVENANCE Harry Lunn, NEW YORK & PARIS Private Collection, FRANCE Appointed Honorary Secretary of the Royal Photographic Society in 1853, Roger Fenton was named official photographer of the Crimean War in 1855 by Queen Victoria. His documentation of this war included approximately 360 negatives, depicting the unloading of material at the port, the camps, the officers, generals and soldiers. According to the wishes of the queen, all of these photographs share a picturesque vision of the customs of the war rather than its true horror, the first time this issue was addressed photographically. The vast landscapes can be compared to those by Gustave Le Gray taken during military maneuvers at the Camp de ChGlons (1857).
