BY COGSWELL & HARRISON. Cal. 8 Ga., 3". S# 10354 (1880). At the time this rifle was made, the 8 bore had a good reputation on heavy game & was considered just the thing for most pachyderms. This rifle has 28 1/8" bbls. of high quality 3 stripe Damascus which are fitted w/ full length hand matted rib mounted w/ one standing, one folding leaf express rear & silver bead front sights. Tops of bbls. are engraved "COGSWELL & HARRISON" & "142 New Bond Street London". Rib extension is cut for Scott's patent pivoting square shoulder third bite. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ London black powder proofs for 10 bore & 8 ga. chambers. Serial numbers are on bottoms of bbls. A lg. sling eye is soldered to bottom rib. W&C Scott's number 27393 is also on bottom rib in front of loop. Heavy case hardened top lever action is of Perkes' patent w/ cocking rods in watertable. Watertable is also marked "NO 761" "PATENT" "409" & "PATENT ACTION". Action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), pivoting third fastener & dbl. triggers. Backspring sidelocks are fitted w/ sliding safety bolts. Action & lockplates are engraved w/ 60% coverage well cut varying size scroll w/ in scroll borders. Lockplates are engraved "COGSWELL & HARRISON" on scrolling ribands. Blued trigger guard engraved w/ scroll on bow has S# on tang which extends to horn grip cap in usual dbl. rifle fashion. Heavy pistol grip buttstock of lightly marbled & figured European walnut measures 14 1/4" over solid red Silver type pad w/ top spur. Stock also features closely spaced point pattern checkering at grip, right hand shadowline cheekpiece along w/ a vacant silver oval & sling eye matching that on bbls. along the toeline. Matching near fully checkered splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: approx. 2 1/2". DAC: approx. 1 7/8". LOP: 14 1/4". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 17 lb. 6 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: relatively new brown leather case w/ leather corners & central brass oval is lined in burgundy cloth. A reproduction vinyl Cogswell & Harrison label is in lid. Bottom compartment has partitions topped in oak & has accessories French fitted which include a pair of ebony handle turn screws, a rnd. oil bottle, a brass striker bottle & 2 Cogswell & Harrison marked 8 bore snapcaps. A covered compartment contains 8 fired brass cases marked Cogswell & Harrison. Also accompanying rifle is a copy of the certificate of origin from Cogswell & Harrison listing dates & work history. CONDITION: very good to fine as refinished. Bbls. retaining approx. 90% of a rebrown w/ good definition to pattern. Engraving has been picked up. Sights reblued. Action & lockplates retain over 90% renewed case hardening color, engraving remains clear. Top lever & trigger guard retain most of an old reblue, engraving somewhat softened. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish w/ a few subsequent marks, pad relatively new, checkering recut. Bores are fine to very fine, shiny throughout w/ evidence of light frosting in both bbls., heaviest in left bbl. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Mechanically good. Relatively new case shows a considerable number of scuffs & marks. Straps are good, handle w/ repair using a bent nail. Interior cloth is good to fine. Accessories are very fine. All 8 bore double rifles are rare, Hammerless side locks especially so. (01-20586/MGM). ANTIQUE. $15,000-25,000.
