(1758 - 1794) French revolutionary and leader of the Montagnards, he brought on the Reign of Terror, sending his friends Desmoulins and Danton to the guillotine. Arrested in the Revolution of 9 Thermidor, he attempted suicide, wounded himself, and was finally carted off to the guillotine. D.S. "Robespierre," as a member of the Committee of Public Safety, 1 1/2pp. folio, Paris, June 3, 1794, an extract from the Register of Orders of the Committee, recording the Committee's decision on the subject of the Department of Commissions, which oversaw appointments and salaries. Co-signed by LAZARRE CARNOT, BARERE, COUTHON, and COLLOT-D'HERBOIS, all of whom were instrumental in bringing about Robespierre's downfall just months later. A fine, late example, in fine condition.
