<b>188. MAXIMILIEN DE ROBESPIERRE</b> (1758 - 1794) French revolutionary and leader of the Montagnards, he brought on the Reign of Terror, sending his friends Desmoulins and Danton to the guillotine. Arrested in the Revolution of 9 Thermidor, he attempted suicide, wounded himself, and was finally carted off to the guillotine. Rare D.S. "<i>Robespierre</i>" on Committee of Public Safety letterhead, 2pp. sm. folio, Paris, July 17, 1794, only eleven days before Robespierre himself would meet with the guillotine. The document is an order to commandeer six wagons belonging to the Water Company of Paris, <i>"...which were to be taken over by the Committee of Public safety</i>..." for transport services. Signed by Robespierre at conclusion, also signed by <b>LAZARE CARNOT</b>, <b>BERTRAND</b> and <b>BARERE</b> <b>DE VIEUZAC</b>. Very good. One wonders to what end these carts were used - perhaps to haul the condemned to and from the guillotine? Perhaps to carry Robespierre himself...? Very good.<b>$1,000-1,500</b>

<p>2.) This auction will be held in two parts. Part I (Lots 1-422) will begin at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on Sunday, November 9, 2003. Part II (Lots 500-1457) will begin at Noon Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 11, 2003. However, you may bid at any time prior to the sale dates.
<p>3.) There is a 17 1/2% Buyer's Premium charged on the final hammer price of each lot.
<p>4.) The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any reason.
<p>5.) The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot for any reason.
<p>6.) In the event of duplicate high bids, the earliest bid received will be the winner.
<p>7.) Some lots may carry a reserve beneath which the item will not be sold.

Invoices not paid within thirty days of the date of invoice will incur a 1.5% per month late payment fee.

<p>15.) All material in this sale is guaranteed genuine (unless otherwise stated) to the original buyer. Any item sold which is determined to be not authentic by two independent authenticators acceptable to both parties to the sale may be returned by the original buyer at any time for an immediate refund of the purchase price (only).

Items may also be returned if the catalog description differs significantly from the item¹s actual condition; such returns must be made within three (3) days of purchaser's receipt of the lot(s). All returned lots must be in the same condition as shipped. All items are in very good condition unless stated otherwise. Items housed in frames have not been examined outside of the frame. Lots which bear defects or damage not visible because of framing will not be subject to return.
