Walter, Charing-Cross, 1788FIRST EDITION, with a folding engraved plate, pages viii, 225, (23), with the half-title (with inscription "R. Farquhar the gift / of Mr. Robinson"), 8vo, recent paper boards : with some light old staining but still a very good, well-margined copy. Robertson (1726–1802), Church of England clergyman and writer, vicar of Herriard, Hampshire (1758), rector of Sutton, Essex (1770), vicar of Horncastle, Lincolnshire (1779). A contemporary described his ‘literary labours’ as ‘Herculean’ ; they were also extremely various. Between 1764 and 1785 he contributed over 2600 articles on theology, the classics, philology, poetry, and other subjects, to the Critical Review and also published in the Gentleman's Magazine under the name Eusebius. 1788 he published his most substantial work, The Parian chronicle, a scholarly attempt to prove that the large marble sculpture, The Parian Chronicle, owned by Charles I's friend the Earl of Arundel, was a forgery. Milner's ideas were especially influential on the Catholic architects, Scoles and Ireland.
