<B>ROBERT WOOD (1889-1979)</B></I><BR><I>Yosemite Falls</B></I>, 1935<BR>Oil on canvas<BR>36 x 26 inches (91.4 x 66.0 cm)<BR>Signed lower right<BR>Titled verso<BR><BR> This majestic depiction of lower Yosemite Falls is from the personal collection of Robert Wood, as evidenced by the collection stamp on the back of the painting.<BR><BR>Yosemite Falls has the largest drop of all waterfalls in North America at 2,425 feet. It consists of three sections: the upper falls, the cascades, and the lower falls. Lower Yosemite Falls is the most approachable of the entire valley's falls. It is a gentle walk through the forest to the base of the falls. In springtime, with huge volumes of water, the viewing area is drenched with spray. This is probably why Wood takes the viewpoint to the opposite side of the spray. His perspective is very near the base of the falls.<BR><BR>This painting dates from the mid 1930s and would have been painted on one of Robert Wood's first trips out west. It is a spectacular early painting by the artist that compares favorably with the great tradition of landscape painters who have painted the subject.<BR><BR>Stamp verso:<BR>Collection of Robert Wood<B>Condition Report:</B> Excellent condition.
