The Boston Museum of Fine Arts owns one of Lockwood's finest likenesses-his 1891 portrait of John La Farge, the American painter and stained glass artist with whom he trained and served as a longtime assistant. Born in Wilton, Connecticut, Lockwood studied in Paris following his initial tutelage under La Farge. Once he became an established painter, he became a member of the Society of American Artists (1898), of the Copley Society, Boston, and an associate of the National Academy of Design in New York.
