<B>ROBERT FREDERICK BLUM</B></I> (American 1957-1903)<BR><I>Woman In A Shawl Holding A Fan,</B></I> circa 1878-80<BR>Watercolor on paper<BR>17 x 11 inches (43.2 x 27.9 cm)<BR>Unsigned<BR><BR>Blum's watercolors of from the late 1870s are generally characterized by an emphasis on texture and brushwork, exaggerated effects of light and dark, and an application of fluid washes which merely hint or suggest the shape and character of forms. To achieve these results, Blum regularly worked on grained paper which broke up the brushwork and gave it an extremely fluid appearance .Both in subject and style <I>Woman in Shawl Holding a Fan</B></I>reflects the strong influence of the Spaniard Mariano Fortuny.
