(33.7 x 21.9 cm) 1949 printed 1970s PROVENANCE Private Collection, NORTH AMERICA LITERATURE Anne Wilkes Tucker and Philip Brookman, eds., ROBERT FRANK: NEW YORK TO NOVA SCOTIA, Houston, 1986, p. 19, cat. no. 27 (illustrated) Robert Frank, FLOWER IS..., Tokyo, 1987, pl. 32 (illustrated) Robert Frank wrote: "By 1949 I had lived in New York City for two years. When I returned to Paris, I was 26. The beauty of that city touched me. I could best express my admiration by photographing in the streets. Every day I would go out to look at the way Parisians sold and loved their flowers. It was the beginning of using my camera as the tool for that 'private affair.' Showing my hopes and my sadness with photographs" (Robert Frank, FLOWER IS..., Tokyo, 1987, n.p.). The title of this photograph translates to "daybreak" and is also an allusion to the 1939 French film by Marcel Carné, starring Jean Gabin, in which his character falls in love with a florist. The story concludes tragically at daybreak.
