First is the belief that he did not visit other states until he made his travels on a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955 and 1956 that resulted in his book THE AMERICANS. Second is the notion that he only used a 35mm Leica camera until he began using a larger format Polaroid camera in the 1970s. In the first year that Robert Frank lived in New York, he made a few trips into other parts of the country, from Boston in the north to Washington, D.C., in the south, and as far west as Kansas City. His first exposure to the heartland of America was a trip to St. Louis, Missouri, to photograph for the short-lived magazine JUNIOR BAZAAR. While there, Frank approached this man from behind with his 21/4 inch square-format Rolleiflex camera. He purchased a 35mm Leica camera in September of 1947, and did not begin to use it almost exclusively until he went to Peru the following year.
