In late 1957, it appeared in a popular photography annual with a group of over thirty photographs by Frank made in 1955 and 1956. The following year, it was included in Frank's book, LES AMTRICAINS, published in Paris. When the American edition was finally issued (dated 1959 but not actually released until January 1960) as THE AMERICANS, with an introduction by Jack Kerouac, it received an overwhelmingly negative response. A few years later, however, as with so many revolutionary developments, it was accepted as an important book and soon acquired a cult following, especially among the younger generation. Interest developed to the extent that in 1968 it was re-issued in the first of several subsequent editions. Today, it is universally acknowledged as a major turning point in the history of photography.
