ROBERT E. LEE'S WASHINGTON COLLEGE PLAYS BASEBALL AGAINST V.M.I. IN 1869
Great content post-war student's letter, on illustrated Washington College letterhead, 4pp. 8vo, Lexington, Mar. 27, 1869. In the last year of Lee's life, and while he headed Washington College, who would imagine he would see a victory of this type...in baseball! Student J. Rainey writes his brother: "...The College Base Ball Club challenged the Institute Club for a game last week and they met on the Institute grounds this evening and played about three hours, ours licking the other badly. The Institute...was seriously damaged by the Yanks, they burned it with Gen. Jackson's house...there were some lady visitors here, and the old lady to be a little extra nicer than usual put some napkins on the table, when we went to the table I took mine from under the plate...and Miss Mary C. sitting by me did the same, then seeing that the others left theirs where they were, she was so confused she could scarcely sit up...she tried half dozen times to slip hers back under the plate...none of the crowd knew what to do with them...". Very good.

Estimate: $200 - 300.
