Daguerreotype photograph of legendary Texas Ranger RIP Ford with General Joe Lane. John Salmon Ford was a doctor, lawyer, journalist, Confederate Colonel, Mayor of Brownsville, eventually a Texas Senator, and a renowned Texas Ranger. He got his nickname, "Rip" Ford, during the Mexican-American War in 1846, when he was assigned the duty of writing condolence letters to deceased soldier's families, he would add “Rest in Peace” next to the name, which eventually became shortened to “R.I.P.” He was soon known across the Lone Star State as “Rip” Ford.Both legendary historic figures in Texas history. From the Applewhite-Clark Collection. 2.75" x 3.25"General Joe Lane was Colonel Hays Commanding Officer , during the later part of the Mexican War of 1846-48. Also a personal friend and associate. General Lane entered the Mexican War as Colonel of the 2nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. He was Brevetted Brigadier General and later as a Major General for action at Huamantla, Mexico, in the chase for Santa Anna at the end of the war. Also at this battle, Captain Samuel H. Walker, also under Gen. Lane's command, was killed. After the war, during the 1850's General Lane resided in California, eventually died in Oregon in 1881.
