SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. S# 10491. Bbl. 24". Bbl. made w/o sights. These interesting single shot shotguns built on the slam-fire principle were meant to be used at a very short range & would allow the user to hopefully obtain a better weapon from a now incapacitated enemy. Used to a limited extent in the Philippines during WWII. This improved version was marketed by Naval Officer David Richardson. In spite of being manufactured of better materials, the concept did not prove popular & the guns were only sold for a very short time. Receiver is marked on top "RICHARDSON INDUSTRIES, INC. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. / U.S.A. / MODEL R-5-12 GAUGE PAT. PEND / 10491". The trigger of this gun functions only as a latch & is pulled to remove bbl. for loading. Hardwood stock made w/o buttplate. Wooden vertical hand grip w/ finger grooves attached to bbl. CONDITION: stock has moderate to heavy wear w/ areas of added finish. Notable open crack on left side at toe. Metal parts have worn thinning blue w/ areas of very light pitting. Bore has a frosted appearance w/ visible tool marks. (25-2258/RW). CURIO. $200-300.
