RICHARD WATERHOUSE: (1832 - 1876) Confederate brigadier general who served with Hindman and Holmes in Arkansas and later in the Red River for which he received his promotion. Excessively rare war-date A.L.S signed twice as brigadier general, 1p. 4to., Crockett, Tx., Mar. 26, 1865 to his wife, Rose. In full: "Dear Rose I send cousin Sam Thomas after you. I will probably be in this vicinity for several weeks. I would be glad for you to bring the children, you had better bring a female servant and such things as you may need for two or three months in the way of clothing. Should we leave here we will go to Huntsville. I do not think we will have any active service to perform for two months at farthest. I am in fine health. My love to all the family. Yours affectionately R. Waterhouse". He adds in a postscript: "P.S. Call on your father for $50 Dollars in specie as you may require it for expenses. R. Waterhouse". Very light offsetting at bottom, else very good. Although Kirby Smith ordered Waterhouse "assigned to command" as a brigadier general on April 30, 1864, he was not officially appointed to that rank until March 17, 1865, just nine days before this letter was written. Of course, the war would be over for Lee within a matter of days, but Kirby Smith's forces fought on until their official surrender on May 26, 1865. In mid-December, 1865 Hood's army of 23,000 was crushed at Nashville, and the Confederate Army of Tennessee ceased to exist as an effective fighting force. Obviously, Waterhouse was concerned for the safety of his family, here urging that they flee the region. Very good. $1,500-2,500
