RICHARD E. BYRD
(1888 - 1957) American aviator and explorer, first to fly over the South Pole and established the base "Little America". Partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 12mo., New York, Dec. 8, 1927, a check drawn on the Liberty National Bank ordering a payment of $18,242.00 to the Atlantic Aircraft Corporation. Boldly engrossed and signed the year of Byrd's transatlantic flight. Punch cancels do not affect signature, very good condition. This payment may have been for parts used by Byrd to construct an aircraft in an attempt to win the Orteig Prize in 1927 for making the first nonstop flight between the U.S. and France. Byrd's Fokker Trimotor airplane, America, crashed, severely injuring co-pilot Floyd Bennett and slightly injuring Byrd. As the plane was being repaired, Charles Lindbergh won the prize.
