In July of that year he went to Italy on a busman's holiday, at the urging of Alexey Brodovitch. Rejecting the artifice of the studio, he sharpened his eye on life in the streets of Italy. This photograph of a young girl playing on a railing surrounding the Trevi Fountain resulted from the first of three such expeditions over successive summers. Believed to be a unique vintage print, this image is a variant of the picture published in Avedon's first retrospective book, OBSERVATIONS, (1959), which he also chose to reproduce in the more recent collection, Evidence, 1944-1994 (1994). Avedon rapidly became the quintessential fashion photographer. The film character Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire in the 1957 musical, FUNNY FACE, was even modeled after him. Throughout his career Avedon periodically returned to the streets to take pictures, but the later results rarely equaled his early photos of Italian street urchins.
