<B>RHODOCHROSITE SLICE</B></I><BR> <I>Capillitas Mine, Andalgalá, Catamarca, Argentina </B></I><BR>The Capillitas Mine has been mined since the days of the Incas - hence the nickname for its world famous rhodochrosite: "Inca Rose". The mine is at a high altitude (10,000 - 11,500 feet) so regular mining is difficult but it is the only source in the world for rhodochrosite stalactites. Rhodochrosite from here is highly prized because of the depth of colors and strength of its patterns. The pink and red coloration is not revealed until the stalactites are sliced and the inner core is exposed - colors can range from light pink to deep crimson red. This slice has been very well polished and its double "eye" indicates that it was originally two separate stalactites that, over the eons, grew together.
