(RHODE ISLAND CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE)
"A great early Civil War archive of Henry B. Crandall of Providence, Rhode Island concerning the recruitment and departure for the front of the 1st R. I. Vols. in 1861. Crandall enlisted in the regiment in June, 1861 and apparently compiled a pair of scrap books, filling the pages with sundry items related to the regiment. Included in the books are five printed broadsides dealing with the organization of men for the regiment and general orders issued by Col. Ambrose Burnside outlining military protocol for the new recruits, each dates between April and May 1861, and measures from folio to 12"" x 15""; various size and length newspaper clippings announcing and outlining the regiment's departure from Providence in the Spring of 1861; four military passes for Sgt. Crandall issued to him during the summer of 1861 with one military pass entirely in the hand of and signed by Burnside as colonel of the Rhode Island militia, another pass signed by one ""Maj. Manton"", and two partly-printed passes signed by DRAKE DE KAY and ""Ch. H. Thompkins by Manton"". Crandall initially enlisted as a sergeant in the 1st Rhode Island, but was soon mustered into the 1st R.I. Light Artillery, serving throughout the war. Additionally included in the lot is a 1866 commission for Crandall as an officer in the Rhode Island militia; approximately one hundred pre-and postwar militia documents, personal papers, and an albumen photo of his wife. A great archive from a prominent member of Providence society, worthy of further research. Some glue shrinkage affecting text, light soiling and staining, else very good." 2416 A great early Civil War archive of Henry B.
