DS, 3pp, legal folio, docketed June 20, 1780. Excellent content. Boldly penned. Dampstain on verso affecting four words; toning along folds; o/w VG/Fine. Encapsulated. In part, “...the Incursions of the Savages have been prosecuted with such unrelenting Fury, and the Force appointed for our Support so small and ineffectual, that early as the Year is, our settlements are wasted...no Industry or labour can be prosecuted, ever day lessens our numbers, many being killed captivated or wounded, many tired out of Calamitys and alarms, and despairing of further Support, abandon the County...” They also suggest that the German regiment posted nearby at Fort Jenkins and elsewhere be ordered to do something about the Indian threat, for “Men, cooped up in a Fort, unless they turn out on Occasion, are of no service to the Country...” Continuing, “The Time of putting in spring Crops is at Hand; if the County have not a Prospect of doing this in Safety, it is beyond controversy, that there will not one farmer stay in the County; the towns of course soon follow their example...” The petitioners predict that should Northumberland be laid waste, Lancaster and Cumberland Counties would be next to experience assault. “This would be new Niagara to the enemy, hither their Friends would flock, and from hence their predatory War will be prosecuted...” They plea to “drive these Ravagers from our Borders and carry destruction to their own Towns...” This desperate appeal from the Pennsylvania frontier underscores the western region’s function as a buffer zone for the more populated areas to the East.
