REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA LIGHT DRAGOON POWDER HORN.
Horn measures approx. 14 3/4" in length & has a screw out wooden butt to facilitate filling w/ gun powder. This type of butt also facilitated attachment of the shoulder sling along w/ the iron loop attached to the body of the horn. The brass charger is of an exact type that has been excavated near Revolutionary War battlefield such as Fort Ticonderoga. This type of charger has been described in many books & is also known to exist on a “U. STATES” branded horn. The horn body is deeply carved, “L (flower) D / 28”. This undoubtedly stands for Light Dragoons & the “28” is a rack or inventory number. Possibly the most classic form & well known of all Revolutionary War horns. CONDITION: the butt screw functions perfectly as does the brass charging spout. The wood has original finish & the spout has a deep, ancient brass patina. The body of the horn is solid & the carving is clear. (02-14963/BF). $600-900.
