(REVOLUTIONARY WAR BLACK SOLDIERS PAYROLL)
Exceptionally rare war-date A.D.S. 1p. 4to., Hartford, May 9, 1781 in which a group of Black soldiers, among others, are paid by the State of Connecticut for their services as members of the Connecticut 6th Regiment. Twenty men are listed, along with the sums due each, "being the balance due to said men on the first day of January 1780 - as stated by the Com'tee from the State, & from the Army…". Among those soldiers listed are "Pomp Liberty", "Peter Freeman", "Andrew Jack", "Prince George", "Dick Violet", and so on. The document is signed by one Elihu Mather on behalf of the men, who are presumably illiterate. One tiny hole at fold junctions at center, minor edge loss with no loss of text, else very good.
