REVENGE IN THE PACIFIC
"REVENGE IN THE PACIFIC"
Excellent group of two iconic World War II American submarine images. Included is: a period 14" x 11" b/w photo, likely first generation, showing the American submarine USS NAUTILUS's periscope view of the Japanese destroyer YAMAKAZE as that vessel slips beneath the waves after being torpedoed by the NAUTILUS. The photo, framed, bears no backstamp but shows age consistent with having been printed contemporaneously with the sinking. Small corner crease. The photo is accompanied by a 20" x 16" color propaganda lithograph: "REVENGE IN THE PACIFIC" showing the same image, colored and retouched, also showing beneath an American submarine officer and sailor showing three fingers representing vessels torpedoed by the Nautilus. Issued by the Electric Boat Co., New York, 1943. Both images are simply framed. After participating in the invasion of eastern Java, the YAMAKAZE engaged a group of Allied destroyers during the Battle of the Java Sea, and was credited with assisting in the sinking of the American destroyer USS POPE, the British cruiser HMS EXETER and destroyer HMS ENCOUNTER. On 25 June 1942, while steaming independently. YAMAKAZE was torpedoed and sunk with all hands by the NAUTILUS approximately 60 nautical miles southeast of Yokosuka. Thus, her sinking truly was an act of "revenge". Exhibition history: Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, 1995-2007. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
