(REPUBLIC OF TEXAS)
"A scarce Republic of Texas related piece, a calling card for Memucan Hunt, described on the card as the ""Envoy Extraordinary and Minster Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Texas."" Hunt served as the Republic Texas's envoy to Washington in 1837 initially to secure diplomatic recognition for the republic. With recognition by the U.S. secured, he began an effort to promote the annexation of Texas by the United States. He met with little success as President Martin Van Buren opposed statehood for newly-independent Texas, fearing deepening sectional differences over the expansion of slavery. Texas would finally be admitted to the Union under President James Polk in 1845. Minor soiling, otherwise very good condition." 2484 A scarce Republic of Texas related piece, a calling card for Memucan Hunt, described on the card as the ""Envoy Extraordinary and Minster Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Texas.""
